What we do

We are an independent self-regulatory body who has been responsible for promoting, regulating, and enforcing the highest standards in marketing communications in Ireland for over 40 years. 

Our Code of Standards for Advertising and Marketing Communications in Ireland applies to all commercial marketing communications and sales promotions in Ireland and aims to ensure advertising is Legal, Decent, Honest and Truthful.

Our Mission

To protect consumers and the public by setting and enforcing advertising standards, monitoring advertising, and taking action to remove advertising that is harmful, offensive, or misleading.

To encourage care and compliance in the advertising industry through a combination of empowerment, enforcement, and education.

To collaborate with government and key stakeholders to ensure that everyone can have confidence in self-regulation.

How we achieve our mission

Policy and Advocacy

We engage with state agencies, government departments and other stakeholders to advocate for effective advertising regulation.

Knowledge Sharing

Along with our Code, we provide updated guidance notes, press releases, webinars and social media updates regarding advertising regulation in Ireland.

Monitoring

We proactively look at advertisements to check compliance with the Code. If we consider an advertisement to not be compliant, we engage with the advertisers to have the advertising corrected

Complaints Management

We investigate complaints regarding advertisements and commercial marketing communications that may not comply with the Code.

Copy Advice Service

We offer advertisers, agencies, media and promoters copy advice on whether a proposed marketing communication or sales promotion conforms to the Code.

The Code

We set the standards that advertisers, agencies and media are required to abide by. The Code is drawn up by our Board following detailed consultation with the public, advertisers, agencies and media, consumer representatives and Government Departments.

ASA and EASA

The Advertising Standards Authority is a founding member of the European Advertising Standards Alliance (EASA).

EASA is an association of 41 organisations committed to ensuring responsible advertising through self-regulation.

The role of EASA is to assist in the development and coordination of
self-regulation across Europe through advocacy and policy, self-regulation development and co-ordination and developing best practice recommendations for advertising self-regulated organisations.

ICAS and ASA

The Advertising Standards Authority is a founder member of the International Council for Ad Self-Regulation (ICAS).
ICAS is a global platform which promotes effective advertising self-regulation.
Their mission is to exchange best practices around ad self-regulation and solutions to challenges faced by the advertising industry, facilitate the establishment of new self-regulated organisations and promote self-regulation worldwide.
