Advertisment
The Meteor Extras section of the Meteor.ie website stated:
“Go free to the cinema
Every month. Every customer.
You can use your monthly free cinema ticket to see any movie, any time of the week, any time of the month in a cinema of your choice.”
Complaint
The complainant, having viewed the offer, attempted to book a ticket for the IMC cinema in Galway, however, he was advised that the offer did not apply to ‘any’ movie in the cinema and that he would have to pay a fee for his movie choice. In view of this the complainant considered that the description of ‘any movie’ was misleading.
Response
Meteor stated that they not consider that they were in breach of the Code as they had clearly called out that certain exclusions applied for IMC cinemas at clause 37 and 38 of the Meteor Cinema Advertising terms and conditions which were available on their website.
Conclusion
Complaint Upheld
The Complaints Committee considered the detail of the complaint and the advertisers’ response. The Committee noted that the offer had stated that it applied to ‘Any’ movie at any time of the week and month, however, as conditions applied to specific cinemas which contradicted this term, they considered that the advertising was in breach of Sections 4.1, 5.5 and 5.16 of the Code.
The advertisement should not reappear in its current form.
